Great find!

What a find! I just found this amazing reel, all in pencil test, on YouTube via "What About Thad? blog.
I had never seen an entire Disney short as a working reel before and it is just stunning. I love the animation and layouts and even though it is not that funny, it still entertaining.

I can not believe that Disney went so far ahead with this short but decided to shelve it. Can you imagine the amount of money they spent on this to simply shelve it?

At least we can all enjoy and study the great animation by Fred Moore, Hal King, Cliff Nordberg and others and the great layouts.

  1. Mark Henn had a lecture at Cal Arts a couple of years back and he showed this to everybody. He said he was one of the ones who dug this out of the morgue, shot it, and timed it out. I forget who he had mentioned worked with him on putting it all together. Glad it has been placed online for all to appreciate.

  3. Wow! This a great find.

By the way, I really liked "The Emperor's New Groove". Sounds like there was a bit of trouble behind the scenes on that film, but it all came together in the end. Belated congrats on a job well done.

  5. Pencil tests seem to show in more vivid detail the quality of the drawings. This seems to get lost with the final full color versions. Great post. Really enjoyed watching that.

  8. Awesome! This is the famous "Bee Concert" I heard Burny Mattinson talking about. Supposedly Jeffery Katzenberg halted production on this because of the flower intoxication thing.

According to Burny the original negative was stolen....

  9. Whooo...now this is a true Disney Treasury to be sure of! Very good find this and so informative on the "behind the scenes" of Disney animation then. Interesting, too, to see that the "narrated" style would later be used for Goofy and Donald's shorts someway down the line.

Correct me also but is that Paul Frees as the narrator?

  11. The short has been removed from Youtube , so who was lucky enough to see it before, congratulations. For those who did not, sorry and you missed a great opportunity to see a classic Disney work in progress reel.
